- Colorized image of Lake Vesuvius located 8 miles north of Ironton. The lake is 143.27 acres across with 10 miles of shoreline. In 1939 the narrows of Storms Creek were offered as a site for a lake. They were dammed by the Civilian Conservation Corp. The lake was named Vesuvius for the historic Vesuvius Iron Furnace located at the base of the dam.
