<text>The Hotel Grimes was located on the southeast corner of Second (2nd) and Gay Streets. Built by H. S. Grimes, it was a famous building in Portsmouth as it was the first "flat" building, meaning the roof was void of any irregularities.(Portsmouth Daily Times, July 27, 1907) It had 43 rooms and was rented by the Y.W.C.A. in 1912. It became Grimes Apartments from 1922 to 1966 when it was razed for the expansion of Ohio University Portsmouth Branch, later Shawnee Community College.
The Hotel Washington, at 500 Second (2nd) Street, was known for its beautiful entrance way. In about 1980 it became part of the Riverview Retirement Center along with the Biggs House.</text>
