Tinted image of the Washington Hotel. Built in 1901 at the corner of Second (2nd) and Market Streets, the Washington charged $3.00 per day in 1903 (Evans history of Scioto County.) From 1939 to 1956 it was known as the Milner Hotel. In 1979 the Washington House became part of the Riverview Retirement Center along with the Biggs House.

This five story 50-bed building was opened on May 1, 1924. After additions and expansions in the 50's and 60's it was razed in 2001.

It was re-named Smith-Everett Hospital by Dr. Charles Smith and Dr. Clyde Everett in 1946. It was expanded as Southern Hills Hospital from 1962 until it closed in 1987. It was re-opened in 1988 as Hempstead Manor, a residential home for seniors.
Sepia toned drawing of the Washington School built in 1926 on 11th (Eleventh) Street near John Street. It was leased by Happy Hearts from 1965 until 1979. In 1990 Portsmouth Inner City Development Corporation purchased and developed the building into 20 apartments.
Tinted image of the LaRoy Theatre located at 848 Gallia Street The name LaRoy came from the owners' names, Simon Labold and Dan W. Conroy. It opened in 1926 to a crowd of thousands, according to a Portsmouth Times article. The building was razed in 1974 to widen Gay Street.
Colored image of Williams Shoe Factory, 830 Murray Street. It was founded March 7, 1922 by three Portsmouth brothers - A. Graves, Forest L., and Paul G. Williams, sons of W. Grant Williams. In 1935 they purchased the Excelsior Shoe Company building which was built in 1913. Williams closed in 1976. Mitchellace (Sole Choice) moved into the building about 1980.
