It would pop up every decade or so. Prominent citizens scratched their names on the rock. There is an image of a sort of smiling face on the rock that has sparked considerable interest over the years. Some believe this is an ancient Indian hieroglyph. Also pictured are some business ads.

The July 16, 1935 Portsmouth Times announced that Williams Manufacturing Company had purchased the Excelsior Shoe Company building at Gallia Street and Campbell Avenue for $75,000.00. This was another step in the liquidation of the Excelsior Shoe Company.
