David Gibson built a distillery nearby in 1857. George Davis bought and operated both businesses from about 1860 until shortly before his death in 1894.

Original buildings, located at Eighth (8th) & Waller Streets, were dedicated in 1875 when the First Presbyterian Church needed expansion due to a growing congregation. A new brownstone church. The church was dedicated in 1911. A fire gutted much of the building in 1933, but it was restored and re-dedicated in 1935.
Tan-aged paper attached to a scrapbbok page. Pictured is a typed letter to Henry A. Lorberg from Herrman Mohr of the Cleveland store of the Richman Brothers Co. The letter refers to a transaction that occurred in which Mr. Lorberg sent them two photographs of the new Temple building. The company acknowledges their beginnings in Portsmouth. Richman Brothers Company began in Portsmouth and was located on Front Street in 1856. Originally the company was called Lehman, Richman & Company as it was started by Joseph Lehman and Henry Richman.

It was started in Scioto County because there was a large German population here.
