Gharky was an early resident of Alexandria, then Portsmouth. He started out as a carpenter building river & canal boats, later, in the mid-1800s, became involved in Portsmouth city government.
Built in 1849 by J.W. (John Walter) Purdum.
A History of Scioto County, Nelson W. Evans (1903): "from 1832 until 1880, Mr. Purdum engaged in contracting and building in Portsmouth, during which period he constructed many of the largest and finest public and private buildings in the city."
The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Eli Kinney was born in Portsmouth, 1813, died in Kentucky, 1884. Nelson Evans History of Scioto County, Ohio (1903) states "In 1849, he (Eli Kinney) built the brick dwelling on the southwest corner of Court and Fourth Streets and lived there until his removal to Cincinnati".
