The first post office near Buena Vista was opened in 1848, the year after U.S. forces defeated Santa Anna in the Battle of Buena Vista in northeast Mexico. In 1960, the post office closed and the mail was processed through Stout.

Construction began in the spring of 1916 and the first train crossed July 1917. Construction was overseen by the McClintic-Marshall Company of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The bridge is 3463 feet in length allowing trains of the CSX Railroad to pass over the Ohio River.
