The Alex M. Glockner Hardware Company was located on Gallia and Gay streets. In the 1900 City Directory, it says the address was 206 Market and 135 West Streets.
Hibbs Hardware was located was located on Sixth (6th) Street across from the old stone post office. Hibbs closed about 1990.
Opened in 1898 at Chillicothe and Third (3rd) Streets, the Anderson Brothers Company first was a home factory shoe store, but later they added dry goods. In 1925 the two top floors were added to the Anderson Brothers Department Store building. From 1935 to 1984 the building was home to Sears, Roebuck & Company. After Sears closed it was remodeled into the Park apartments.
The Biggs House was built at the corner of Front and Market Streets. In 1980, it became part of the Riverview Retirement Center along with the Washington Hotel. The main entrance of the Biggs House now faces the courtyard shared with the Washington and its side doors are on 445 Front Street.
In 1889, the Breece Manufacturing Company was located on the east end of Portsmouth near the N & W terminal yards and the Ohio River. They made table rims, veneer tops, panels, chair backs, carriage and automobile rims and spokes, and other furniture.
The Brodt Shoe Company was located at 519-527 Front Street.
The Tracy Shoe Company was located at 630-632 2nd (Second) Street.
Both manufactured wholesale shoes.
The Burgess Steel and Iron Works was incorporated in 1872, and it was located on the river at end of Third (3rd) Street. This factory burned in 1898 and Levi York re-built in New Boston in 1898-1899.
The Standard Telephone Manufacturing Company was located at 1021-1025 Gallia Street. It was later changed to the Standard Supply Company and specialized in electrical supplies manufacturing.
The Carnegie Building or the Portsmouth Public Library, at 1220 Gallia Street was opened in 1906 thanks to Henry Lorberg and Andrew Carnegie.
Damarin Block Building is at the corner of Second (2nd) and Court Streets. It was home to the Hansen Furniture Company and had held many other businesses.
Central National Bank was located at 9th (Ninth) Gallia Street, looking east over what would become the Roy Rogers Esplanade.
The Security Savings Bank was located at 28 Gallia Street.
Both images are of Chillicothe Street looking north from Grant Bridge. The Turley Building is on the right while Corner Book Store is on the left corner. The Turley Building was built in 1905 at Chillicothe and Second (2nd) Streets by Leslie Turley. In 1906 it held the First National Bank and several other businesses. The Checker Store was there from 1952 to 1973. It was razed in 1973 for the expansion of Shawnee State University. The "1900" date is a typo error.

The image on the left is looking north on Chillicothe Street from Third (3rd). In about the center of the photograph is a three-story building with dormer windows on the roof. This is the Grand Opera House built in 1895. It suffered damage from a fire in 1914 and was rebuilt to be used by the Kresge dime or ten cent store for many years. The date "1890" is a typo error.
The one on the right is the same scene in 1980 when the Kresge store looks white.
Looking south on Chillicothe in the early 1900's shows Hass Mens Clothing at the corner of Fifth (5th). The Masonic Temple with Bragdon's Dry Goods sign on the side stands at the corner of Fourth (4th). This Masonic Temple was built in 1906, partially burned in 1925, was rebuilt to only four floors and became Kobackers 1928-1971, and then Desco Federal Credit Union about 1980. The date "1900" is a typo error.
