Estimated construction about 1900. John F. Flannigan Family resided into the 1920s. John F. Flannigan was a well known businessman in the Market Street district. His business dealings included transfer of coal, sand and gravel, household goods and pianos as a specialty.
John F. Flannigan b. March 16 1848, Mt. Savage, MD
d. January 27, 1918, Portsmouth, Ohio. Buried in Greenlawn Cemetery.
Married: Sarah A. Murphy, October 9, 1884 in Scioto County, Ohio. They had seven children.
Mrs. Flannigan remained in the house until 1924 then moved to 1117 Twenty-Second (22nd) Street. She died October 12, 1931. The house has had many residents and owners since 1924.

Formerly Schaefer's Food Market from about 1900 until the early 1940s. The grocery store was run by Joseph P. Schaefer and Sons. In the mid-1940s, Schaefer's branched out with larger super markets in the region. The original building was used as a warehouse for many years.
In 1978 the building housed Portsmouth Wholesale Furniture. In 1980, Vaspar Paint Center. By 1991 the building was independently owned.

About 1907, the original bakery was started by August Knockle, a German immigrant. He ran the bakery until 1927 , and Barbour Counts bought the (Daylight) bakery. From 1927-1984 Barbour K. Counts, Counts' Bakery. From 1984-2016+ In 1984, Helen Singleton purchased business.
